Measles: know the symptoms

Measles is an infection that spreads very easily and can cause serious problems in some people. Those most at risk are children under 1, the unvaccinated, pregnant women or those with weakened immune systems. There is no specific treatment available, so it is important to get vaccinated (MMR) to avoid serious illness.

Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a red brown blotchy rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.

The first symptoms include:

  • high temperature
  • runny or blocked nose
  • cough
  • red, sore, watery eyes
